For those of you that are nascar fans you will probably agree with me that today's race is one of the best of the year. Personally I think the Talladega races are as good if not better than Daytona! But that's just me.
Anyway in 2005 Henry Sr, Lizzy, Barbara and I went to the race but we started the weekend off in Atlanta. If you haven't spent the weekend in Atlanta you need to add it to your bucket list. It is a great city with a ton to see and experience. We drove down on a Saturday and only had one day to visit everything since we were going to the race on Sunday.
We started at the Bass Pro Shop just north of Atlanta which I am sure some of you are saying who cares about Bass Pro...well in our family we refer to it as "The Man's Store"...some call it the Mecca! Anyway we try to visit all the different locations since they are set up a little different. The one in Missouri is by far the largest one I have been in...the Atlanta location had a lot of cool animals around...the one in Concord has a huge fish tank and so on.
Anyway from there we visited The World of Coke which was still in it's old location, the Atlanta Underground which is a bunch of shops in an old subway station underground...kind of cool but kind of junky. We also went to CNN which was excellent and the Olympic Park where the Olympics parties were held in 1996 and the bomb went off in the crowd. There were plenty of other things to see that we just didn't have time for...The Aquarium is world famous and supposed to be outstanding. I think you have to get tickets ahead of time to even get in. There are a couple sports complexes also that are nice including the Braves. Our next trip will include a Braves game and the Aquarium.
That night we went to Ruth Chris Steak house to celebrate some birthday's and anniversaries. Always a crowd favorite but it will break your piggy bank...expect to pay $50 per person and more if you drink wine like my wife does! Another local favorite that we always try to go to is The Varsity which serves many different things but Hot Dogs is what they are famous for. It is located right off the highway so even if you are just driving through it is worth the stop. Parking and the streets around it are kind of a pain so Larry Sr I wouldn't recommend taking the motor home!
If you go on the weekend you can get some great rates at the downtown hotels...we stayed at the Hilton and it was beautiful. I had hotel points at the time and they only charged 10,000 points for a Saturday night. Normally a hotel will be 25-30,000 depending.
As I said earlier on Sunday we drove over to Talladega (1 hour ride) and went to the race. We all agreed that the big tracks are better to see on TV but it was still fun. We drove all the way back to Charlotte that night and it was brutal. We were coming down a road close to our house and I was slowing way down to a stop when my father said what are you doing...I said there is a big tree laying across the road...he said I think you are seeing things which it turns out I was! I guess that's why they tell you not to drive when you are too tired.
Go Harvick!
