Highland Games-Rural Hill

Well kids we have been trying to get together with Robert and Melinda for a long time and something was always preventing it but Melinda suggested the Highland Games, we marked it in our calendar and we made it happen.  This is our 2nd time attending the Highland Games...we went in 2006 with the Robinson's at Grandfather Mountain.

There is so much to show you that I am going to split it up into 2 days but just in case you don't know the Highland Games are a celebration of the Scottish Clans and the Celtic Culture.  There is dancing, bands, games and plenty of sites to see.

One of the first things we did was the hatchet throw.  You bought 10 throws for $1 and your mother couldn't wait.

I think she paid extra for private lesson...or maybe just to get close to this guy??

   It's all in your form!

She ended up with only 2 landing on the wood but she had fun hitting everything else around her!  I sent a picture to your Grandfather Clark and he advised me to behave because he taught his kids to not get mad but get even.

While walking around looking at the items from that era we ran across this table.  Your mother and Melinda spent a lot of time here until they realized that these were not sex toys then they were ready to move on.

Some of the best parts of the Highland Games is the music and they had all kinds up to and including rock type music.  All the performers were good and we all enjoyed listening to them.

Plenty of Bag Pipes

The Rock Band-Scottish Style!

Of course the shopping, crafts and pottery were everywhere.  I think I got away pretty cheap this time but we will see how the credit card bill looks.  Melinda like the hat section...not sure if it would work now that she's working downtown but to each their own!

They had Scottish food booths all over and even though there were lines they moved us through pretty quickly.  I'm not sure I can remember all the food we tried but I know there was Shepard Pie, Haggis, Sausage Rolls, Meat Pies and Shortbread Cookies.  The beer was pretty good also and for a little extra you get a glass with a leather sleeve that goes over it....by a little I mean $17 but then refills were only $5.

Robert ran into an old girlfriend while we were there.

We had a great day, the weather was perfect and fun times by all.  If you haven't been to a Highland Game Festival you should add it to your bucket list.

  1. I don't know if we will live long enough for all these bucket list things to do but they sure do look like fun !!!

I am sure glad Barbara only pushed me down the stairs and didn't use me as a target for her ax throwing.

Does Melinda know what is under a skunks tail ?

Does the leather sleeve and glass come for the $17?
